Diagnostic and Therapeutic
Services: Our hospital is equipped to provide
diagnostic and therapeutic services for your pets' complete health
care needs. We have a fully equipped in-hospital laboratory
capable of conducting most routine testing. For tests
requiring special equipment or techniques, we consult with a number
of leading laboratories in the lower 48.
Surgical Services: Our
state-of-the-art surgical suite provides for the performance of a
wide variety of soft tissue and orthopedic surgical
procedures. We are the only veterinary hospital in Southeast
Alaska to offer AO/ASIF bone plating of fractures, and we are
also equipped to manage fractures and other orthopedic conditions
utilizing intramedullary pins, cerclage wire, external skeletal
fixators, and external coaptation (splints and casts), depending
upon the nature of the fracture.
TPLO: Dr. New is the only
veterinarian in Southeast Alaska qualified to
perform Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy, the most
progressive and successful technique available for the treatment of
ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in medium and large breed
dogs. Dr. New completed the TPLO course and became
licensed to perform the procedure in November of 2003. Since
that time, he has been accumulating the neccessary (and
expensive) instruments required to perform the procedure, and has
undergone additional training under the guidance of surgical
specialists in Alaska and Arizona. We are very
pleased to be able offer this procedure to animal owners
throughout Southeast Alaska.
Anesthesia: We utilize the safest
available anesthetic medications and techniques to provide
that extra margin of safety, especially for geriatric, pediatric,
or other high risk patients. Using the most modern equipment, the
patient's vital signs (including blood pressure, ECG, pulse rate
and character, oxygen saturation of the blood, respiratory rate,
character, and end tidal CO2) are monitored during all anesthetic
procedures. We have a technician assigned to monitor
anesthesia continuously during all procedures, from the moment an
animal is anesthestized until it regains consciousness, and we keep
a written anesthesia record as part of each patient's medical
record for future reference. In all animals undergoing
general anesthesia (with the exception of extremely short
procedures), an intravenous catheter is placed to deliver i.v.
fluids for the maintenance of blood pressure, and to provide
instantaneous access to a vein for i.v. injections in the unlikely
event of an anesthetic energency.
Pain Management: We take pride in
providing aggressive pain management for our surgical patients
before, during, and after surgey using a range of techniques
including pre and post-op narcotics, constant rate infusions of
pain medication during and after surgery, transdermal patches
(which deliver pain medication over a period of days), epidural
analgesia, and antiinflammatory drugs. Which pain management
techniques are used depends upon the procedure and the patient, but
all patients are assumed to have pain following even minor
procedures, and are treated accordingly. We also provide
advanced pain management for our cancer patients, and those
suffering from arthritis or other painful conditions.
Radiology Services: Our on-site,
modern X-ray equipment provides high quality radiographs to aid in
the diagnosis of many disorders. We perform radiographs
of the hips and elbows for OFA certification, and can
help you with the process for receiving OFA certification. We
have the capability to digitize radiographs, which can then be
submitted via e-mail to a radiology specialist for
evaluation if necessary.
Laboratory: Our in-house
laboratory facilities provide for serum chemistry, hematology,
serology, urinalysis and parasite testing. We also utilize
commercial veterinary laboratories for specialized diagnostics and
consultations.
Dentistry: Our dental services
include teeth cleaning and polishing, dental X-rays, tooth
extractions and oral surgery, and counseling on proper home dental
care.
Behavioral Counseling: We can
provide advice regarding the correction of problems such as
excessive barking, chewing, spraying, scratching, digging, house
soiling and aggression. In some cases, mostly cases of
aggressive behavior, we work in consultation with a board certified
veterinary behaviorist.
Boarding: We provide cat
boarding as a service to our clients. All boarders receive personal
attention from our caring staff. Pets may be dropped off and picked
up during regular business hours Monday through Friday, or by prior
arrangement on weekends. We regret that, due to space
limitations, we are unable to board dogs.
